About this teaching

The text

The Madhyamakāvatāra, Candrakīrti’s Introduction to the Middle Way (Uma Jukpa), is the classic entry to Nāgārjuna’s Root Verses on the Middle Way and the definitive statement of the Prāsaṅgika, or Consequentialist, approach to emptiness. It is read as a commentary on the intention of the Sūtra of the Ten Grounds.

Its eleven chapters are organized around the ten grounds (bhūmis) of the bodhisattva path and their perfections, culminating in the perfection of wisdom and the attainment of buddhahood. The sixth chapter, on wisdom, contains its celebrated analysis of the absence of inherent existence, and is among the most studied presentations of the Middle Way view in the monastic colleges.
