The text
The Abhidharmakośa, or Treasury of Abhidharma, is Vasubandhu’s summary of the Abhidharma — the systematic analysis of mind, matter, and the path. Written in some six hundred root verses with an accompanying auto-commentary, it distils the vast Sarvāstivāda tradition and examines, often critically, its tenets.
Its eight chapters treat the elements that make up experience, the sense faculties, the formation of the world, karma, the mental afflictions, the path and the practitioner, wisdom, and meditative absorption. Respected across the Buddhist world — in India, Tibet, and East Asia — it is a foundational text of the shedra and a standard reference for Buddhist psychology and cosmology.
